Founded in the 13th century, the historic centre is a maze of small, narrow cobblestone lanes with hundreds of colourful, gothic, renaissance and baroque houses which enable present day Cesky Krumlov to retain its former medieval character and fairy-tale charm. Across the wooden bridge in the heart of the historic centre and built into the sheer-faced, rocky bank opposite, Cesky Krumlov Castle towers protectively over the old town. The Cesky Krumlov Tour includes a visit to this unique castle [ please note the castle is closed during the winter ]. The castle at Cesky Krumlov is in fact the second largest in the country after Prague Castle and during its long history has been the seat of the powerful Rozmberk, Schwarzenberg and Eggenberg noble families. Due to its illustrious past, the interior of the castle understandably houses rich historical collections of furniture, tapestries, medieval weaponry, paintings and even a golden carriage. The castle also boasts the oldest baroque theatre in the world as well as a unique 18th century theatre with rotating auditorium in the castle's magnificent baroque gardens.
Cesky Krumlov is also a popular starting, transit and landing point for rafting and canoeing trips in the area. As such, all along both banks of the river which snakes its way through the old centre are a wide variety of picturesque, river-side restaurant and bar terraces offering peaceful vantage points from which to relax for a meal or a cold drink by the river as you watch the numerous rafting and canoeing enthusiasts float downstream.
